The XC 40 is a good car but I'd say it's a car that's really best for no more than two people. Little kids of course can fit in the back seat, but by the time you do that and add gear on top of it, it's getting very tight. If you need to fit more like 2 adults + dog + gear, I'd strongly look at the XC60.
